MSC Opera Kicks Off a Final Med Summer Before Year-Round La Romana Caribbean Sailings Begin in November

MSC Opera has started its summer Europe season with 10-night Western Mediterranean sailings — and this is the ship's last Med summer before a bigger move. Trade outlet Cruise Industry News reported June 11, 2026 that Opera will cross the Atlantic in early November and become the first MSC ship to homeport year-round in La Romana, Dominican Republic, launching MSC's first permanent Southern Caribbean program from that port.

La Romana itinerary and what's new

MSC's January 2026 announcement frames La Romana as a year-round Southern Caribbean base — the line's first program of that kind in the region. Weekly seven-night sailings open for booking now, and you can chain two back-to-back weeks into a 14-night butterfly combination.

The inaugural rotation calls at Catalina Island (Dominican Republic), Fort-de-France (Martinique), Virgin Gorda (British Virgin Islands), and St. John's (Antigua). MSC also offers Fly and Cruise packages for guests reaching La Romana by air.

Starting early 2027, Opera adds ABC Islands and Grenada rotations, and Fort-de-France becomes a second embarkation port in April 2027. MSC estimates the program will bring about 120,000 international visitors to the region annually.

La Romana wins if you want Martinique, the BVIs, and Antigua without sailing out of Miami or Fort Lauderdale, and if your home airport has reasonable fares into the Dominican Republic.
