Mexico Opens Door to Relocating Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day — Mahahual Still Off the Table
President Sheinbaum says Mexico is talking with Royal Caribbean about moving Perfect Day Mexico to another site — but Mahahual stays blocked and Royal has not confirmed a new location.

What happened
Mexico is talking with Royal Caribbean about whether Perfect Day Mexico could land somewhere else in the country — but not at Mahahual, where regulators said no on May 19. At a May 27 press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum said the federal government is evaluating whether the line could develop the private-destination concept at another site in Mexico, subject to environmental viability review, according to El Universal.
That is a different headline from the rejection we covered in our May 21 Perfect Day Mexico piece. Environment Secretary Alicia Bárcena told reporters on May 19 that SEMARNAT would not approve the Mahahual project; Royal Caribbean said it was disappointed but respected the decision. As of May 30, Royal Caribbean has not publicly commented on relocating the project — its latest statement remains the May 20 response after the rejection.
If you booked a Western Caribbean sailing from Galveston, Miami, or Port Canaveral, your Costa Maya and Cozumel port days are unchanged. This is a policy story about a future private destination, not an itinerary change to your confirmation.
Why Mahahual was blocked and what relocation could mean
The proposed Mahahual project was valued at roughly $600 million and included beaches, pier infrastructure, and a large water park — a Mexico counterpart to Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas, not the same place. Mexican regulators cited mangroves, reef systems, and groundwater concerns when SEMARNAT rejected the application.
Sheinbaum said Mahahual may receive additional environmental protection and that ecotourism could be limited under certain conditions, according to Royal Caribbean Blog's summary of the May 27 comments. Semarnat and Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama are evaluating stronger safeguards for the area, per El Universal.
No alternative Mexican site has been named publicly. Federal dialogue on a potential alternative location continues, but any new geography would require the same environmental review — relocation talks are not approval. Scrutiny also extends to Royal Caribbean's separate Cozumel beach club plans, Mexico Business News reported.
For our May 21 coverage, the door at Mahahual closed. This week's news opens a possible path elsewhere — with no guarantee and no timeline you should plan around yet.

What this means for you
Separate headlines from your booked sailing. Perfect Day at CocoCay on Eastern and mixed itineraries is in the Bahamas and unaffected. Your Western Caribbean week still means established Mexico calls — Costa Maya, Cozumel, and beach time you can plan for today.
Royal Caribbean has not confirmed participation in relocation talks, and the original late-2027 opening target is no longer reliable. If you are choosing a Royal Caribbean itinerary for Mexico-heavy port days, shop on what ships actually call this year and next — not a Perfect Day Mexico day that may never appear on a published itinerary.
When we checked on May 30, sample Royal Caribbean Caribbean sailings started around $352 per person including taxes and fees — useful for comparing length and month, not as a quote for your cabin. Texas departures from Galveston remain a practical entry point; our Galveston 7-night Caribbean guide walks through Western Caribbean port mix if you are weighing Mexico days against a CocoCay-style stop on a different route.
The sailings below are Royal Caribbean Caribbean options to anchor your search while the private-destination saga plays out in Mexico City and Miami boardrooms.
What to do next
Open your confirmation and match every port and date — clarity beats assumptions when policy headlines move faster than itinerary updates. If you are still shopping, compare Western Caribbean sailings on the port list you actually want rather than waiting on Mahahual.
Watch for Royal Caribbean's next public statement and any named alternative site. We will update when SEMARNAT filings or line announcements change the picture — until then, treat relocation as talk, not a green light.
When you are ready to compare live sailings, browse Caribbean cruises and confirm port calls before final payment.
