Carnival Jubilee Refuels with LNG at Roatán in Cruise Industry’s First Latin America Bunkering

Carnival Jubilee became the first ship to take LNG fuel in Latin America at Roatán’s Isla Tropicale — what that means for Western Caribbean Carnival shoppers.

What happened

On June 1, 2026, Carnival Corporation said it completed the cruise industry's first liquefied natural gas bunkering in Latin America and the Western Caribbean. Carnival Jubilee refueled at Isla Tropicale in Roatán, Honduras, using a mobile LNG fueling solution developed with government and industry partners, according to the company's announcement.

The milestone lands on a ship many Gulf Coast families already compare when shopping Western Caribbean loops from Galveston and other Texas ports. Carnival positions Roatán as a practical fueling stop on routes cruisers actually book—not a one-off test far from passenger itineraries.

What LNG bunkering changes (and what it doesn't)

LNG is cleaner-burning marine fuel. Carnival cites up to 20% lower direct carbon emissions versus conventional fuels, and says LNG largely avoids nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and particulate matter at the point of combustion. The line pioneered LNG in the cruise industry in 2018 and now operates 11 LNG-capable ships, with seven more expected by the end of 2033.

That matters for Carnival's long-term emissions strategy, including a goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from ship operations by 2050. It does not mean your next cabin fare drops because Jubilee bunkered in Honduras, or that every Carnival ship you might book runs on LNG today.

If environmental footprint is part of your decision, know whether your specific sailing is on an LNG-capable ship—but still compare total fare, port mix, and dates like any other Caribbean shop.

Roatán, Isla Tropicale, and Western Caribbean routes

Carnival chose Roatán because the port sits on Western Caribbean itineraries its LNG ships already sail. The company says ships can refuel there with minimal disruption to routes and schedules—a logistics win for the line, not a new port day on your confirmation unless Roatán was already on your itinerary.

Isla Tropicale is Carnival's private destination in Honduras. The company reports roughly $93 million invested in the site since 2009, close to 9 million visitors welcomed, and about $750 million in economic impact for Roatán, per the June 1 release.

Western Caribbean policy headlines have been busy lately—including Mexico relocation talks around Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day project. This bunkering story is different: operational fuel infrastructure tied to a ship Texas cruisers already price-shop.

What this means for you

Jubilee is an Excel-class LNG ship. If you are weighing Carnival against shorter Bahamas-only hops from Florida, Western Caribbean loops that call Honduras and Mexico often deliver more port variety—the same regional map this bunkering supports.

When we checked on June 2, Carnival Caribbean sailings on our site started around $237 per person including taxes and fees across thousands of current options—a directional sample from our daily fare check, not a quote for your cabin category or sailing week. Texas departures remain a practical entry point for Jubilee-style weeks; our Galveston 7-night Caribbean guide walks through how Western Caribbean port days compare to shorter routes.
