Norwegian Bliss Shortens Alaska Port Calls After Propulsion Issue — What Seattle Sailers Should Watch

Norwegian Bliss is sailing Alaska at reduced speed, trimming Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Victoria port time on consecutive Seattle sailings while NCL addresses a propulsion maintenance issue.

What happened on Norwegian Bliss

Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Bliss is operating at reduced speed after a propulsion maintenance issue, trimming port time on consecutive seven-night Seattle Alaska sailings while technical teams work on the repair. According to trade reporting from Cruise Hive and Deep Arrival, captain notices on the May 30, 2026 departure cited a technical issue affecting one propulsion system — guests were told safety is not impacted, but itinerary adjustments are necessary.

Norwegian Bliss carries roughly 4,004 guests at double occupancy on a Breakaway Plus-class hull that NCL positions heavily in Alaska. The ship continues sailing from Pier 66 in Seattle on its weekly summer loop rather than canceling the season. That's a different response than Holland America's Zaandam, which dropped Skagway, Ketchikan, and Glacier Bay entirely on its June sailing, or Royal Caribbean's voluntary rebook offer on Voyager of the Seas. Bliss guests are still getting Alaska — just with less time ashore.

Captain Viktor Vranic's guest letter, summarized in Deep Arrival coverage, framed the issue as something technicians are addressing while the ship stays in service at slower speeds.

Which ports lost time (and why Victoria matters)

On the May 30 sailing, the schedule shifts were specific and painful in the places families notice first:

  • Sitka arrival moved from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM — a two-hour loss that can break morning whale-watching or cultural tours.
  • Juneau slipped from 6:30 AM to 7:00 AM.
  • Ketchikan slipped from 6:00 AM to 6:30 AM.
  • Victoria, B.C. arrival moved from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with departure still at 11:59 PM — roughly one hour on the ground instead of a full evening in the city.

Passenger notices on subsequent June 6 and June 13 sailings describe similar compression, including a reported 59-minute Victoria window on the June 13 departure. CruiseMapper lists that sailing with Victoria on June 19 before a Seattle return June 20; treat published schedules as a starting point and verify live times in the NCL app because mechanical adjustments can keep rolling week to week.

Victoria matters for reasons beyond sightseeing. Seattle roundtrip Alaska itineraries often include a Canadian stop to satisfy coastwise rules — a legal foreign port on the route, not just a bonus afternoon. When that call shrinks to under an hour, you may technically visit Victoria without meaningful time to explore. That's the planning squeeze — not fear about whether the ship is safe.

NCL provided $100 non-refundable onboard credit per stateroom on the May 30 sailing (Deep Arrival also notes a $50-per-guest framing for guests one and two) and automatically refunded line-booked excursions affected by the schedule changes.

What this means for you

If you're booked on Bliss this summer: Your cruise is still happening. The currency you lose is shore time, especially Sitka mornings and Victoria evenings. Pull up port times in the NCL app before you pack — printed confirmations from months ago may not match what's sailing now. If you booked excursions through NCL, watch for automatic refunds on impacted tours; third-party bookings are your responsibility to renegotiate.

If Victoria is on your itinerary: Confirm whether guest shore access is offered during the late-night window before you buy evening restaurant reservations or Butchart Gardens transfers. A technical port call and a tourist afternoon are not the same thing.

If you're comparing NCL Alaska inventory: Bliss is not the only NCL ship in the region. When we checked on June 19, 2026, Norwegian Cruise Line Alaska sailings on our site started from about $339 per person including taxes and fees, with Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Jade among the results alongside Bliss weeks. Use the grid below to compare ships and departure months while you watch whether Bliss port times normalize after repairs.

If you're new to Seattle Alaska: Our Seattle Alaska cruise planning guide covers homeport logistics, typical port pacing, and how NCL compares to HAL and Royal Caribbean from Pier 66.
