Costa bones, Fun Ship energy
Carnival Luminosa is a 2009 Costa hull wearing Fun Ship colors for Australia. We’d put families and first-timers here when they want familiar Carnival food and shows without Excel-class megaship scale.
We experience Luminosa as midsize Carnival with an Italian skeleton. You still get Fun Ship staples through Lido Marketplace, Pizzeria del Capitano, Carnival Deli, and RedFrog Rum Bar, but the bones read Costa Vista-Spirit hybrid rather than Excel newbuild. Our advice is simple: treat her as a friendly Australia flyer, not a floating theme park, and enjoy the smaller crowds that come with that scale.
Cabins follow the conversion playbook across more than a thousand staterooms. Balconies dominate the inventory, Spa staterooms sit near the wellness deck for guests who want quieter mornings, and Grand Vista Suites are the wraparound terrace play when outdoor space matters more than a midship inside. Ask us about lower decks versus under the Lido before you lock a category, especially with light sleepers in the party.
Evenings run Carnival classic: Archipelago and Vela for the main dining rooms, Alchemy Bar for cocktails, Piano Bar 88 for singalongs, and Altair Nightclub when someone wants a late set. Carnival Corporation transferred her from Costa to Carnival Cruise Line in September 2022 at Palermo. After an Italian drydock, new funnel livery, and a crewing stop in Dubai, she repositioned to Australia as a Fun Ship for the Brisbane market. Costa Samsara spa branding and many Italian venue names gave way to Carnival dining brands and comedy-led evening programming for the new guest mix.
