Freestyle Breakaway from New York

Our take: Norwegian Getaway is Breakaway-class Freestyle for families and friend groups who want dining choice, Broadway-leaning shows, and The Waterfront—especially on New York Caribbean or Bermuda weeks. We’d book her when flexibility beats fixed seatings.

We experience Norwegian Getaway as Breakaway-class Freestyle: big-ship dining choice, Broadway-leaning shows, and The Waterfront open promenade tying restaurants to the sea. She suits families, friend groups, and solo travellers who want New York Caribbean or Bermuda weeks without fixed dining times or traditional seatings. Days stack around the aqua park and three-deck atrium; nights land in Getaway Theatre, Second City comedy, Syd Norman’s rock bar, and Bliss club energy.

Cabins range from Studios for solos through standard balconies to The Haven suite complex with a private lounge and sundeck that buffers the mainship crowds. We treat Haven as a ship-within-a-ship when the budget allows; otherwise we obsess over noise near venues and elevator banks on a nearly four-thousand-guest ship. Ask us before you book a midship balcony solely because the deck plan looks convenient on paper.

Dining is the Freestyle maze done well across Savor, Taste, and Tropicana for included nights, then Cagney’s, Ocean Blue, Moderno, La Cucina, and teppanyaki when you want a cover charge. Versus Breakaway Plus sisters, Getaway is the original Breakaway chapter with slightly less scale and still full Freestyle choice for first-timers. Confirm the sailing below and we will match Haven versus balcony to how much crowd buffer you actually need.

She's for
  • Families who want Freestyle dining and kids programs
  • Friend groups treating a cruise like a nightlife-and-shows week
  • Solo travellers eyeing Studios and meet-up energy
  • Shoppers booking New York Caribbean or Bermuda sailings
She's not for
  • Travellers chasing hush and ultra-luxury intimacy
  • Guests who dislike cover-charge specialty mazes
  • Anyone who gets stressed by big-ship crowds and lines
Honest caveat

At full load, peak hours on the aqua park, atrium elevators, and specialty restaurants need patience. We’ll steer you toward quieter cabin pockets and off-peak dining so you skip the worst bottlenecks.

Norwegian Getaway is the second Breakaway-class ship for Norwegian Cruise Line, built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg and delivered in January 2014 as sister to Breakaway. Hull art is by Miami artist LEBO; interiors were developed with Priestmangoode and Tillberg design teams. The Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders served as godmothers at the February 2014 naming in Miami after an inaugural Rotterdam-to-Miami Transatlantic repositioning.

Breakaway-class signatures include The Waterfront open-air promenade wrapping restaurants toward the sea and Freestyle dining across multiple complimentary and specialty venues. The entertainment slate has featured Broadway-style titles such as Legally Blonde and SIX, and the ship also operated as an Olympic hotel ship in Rio during the 2016 Summer Games.

Recent deployment patterns emphasize Caribbean and Bermuda roundtrips from New York, with Great Stirrup Cay on many Eastern Caribbean routings and multi-night Bermuda stays in Kings Wharf. Confirm this sailing’s homeport and itinerary on the page below before treating any hub as permanent.
