Queen Mary 2 isn’t trying to be a floating theme park. She’s the ocean liner we’d book when the Atlantic crossing itself is the vacation, with evenings that still dress for dinner.
We experience QM2 as a ship that rewards sea days. She’s built for Southampton–New York runs at liner speeds, with windscreens, ballroom culture, and Illuminations, still the rare planetarium at sea, plus a library that actually gets used. If you want waterpark energy we won’t push her; if you want to feel like you’re going somewhere by ship, she’s our Cunard flagship pick when the itinerary is the main event.
Cabins span Britannia insides through Grand Duplex suites. Balcony categories matter more on a crossing than you think, because weather changes the outdoor calculus, so we talk grade and location before you chase square footage. Queens Grill and Princess Grill are the suite-dining step-ups, while Britannia is where most guests live — ask us about grill grades versus Britannia Club when the fare jump is on the table on the sailing you’re pricing.
Evenings lean orchestra, formal-optional elegance, and enrichment over nightclub circuits. Versus Queen Anne she’s the true liner with crossing DNA; versus a Royal megaship she’s quieter, dressier, and more about the voyage than the venue checklist. Confirm this sailing below and we’ll match dining room and cabin to how dressy you want the week for your crossing direction.
She’s a true ocean liner, not a resort megaship — North Atlantic decks can be windy, and the culture still skews dressier. Ask us what’s expected on your voyage before you pack.
RMS Queen Mary 2 was completed December 23, 2003, and named by Queen Elizabeth II in Southampton on January 8, 2004. Her inaugural voyage toward Fort Lauderdale began January 12, 2004. Designed by naval architect Stephen Payne as a true ocean liner rather than a conventional cruise ship, she was built for sustained Transatlantic service, with size and speed figures on the fact sheet.
Cunard, owned by Carnival Corporation and operated via Carnival UK, keeps QM2 on the only regularly scheduled passenger liner service between Europe and North America. Typical pattern: seven-night Southampton–New York crossings, plus world cruise segments and seasonal positioning. Fleetmates include Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth, and newer Queen Anne.
Illuminations theatre, the large library, and grill-class dining define the onboard product. Confirm this sailing’s ports and direction below. Westbound and eastbound crossings feel different, so match Britannia versus grill accommodation to the experience you want using the sailings table on this page.
