Destination first, identical sisters

Viking Orion is Viking Ocean’s calm, veranda-every-cabin formula—destination days, included excursions, and Nordic spa culture without kids’ clubs or casino noise. We’d book her for couples who want the itinerary to lead and the ship to stay quietly excellent.

We experience Viking Orion as a small ocean ship that behaves like a boutique hotel at sea. Days revolve around longer port stays and overnight calls; onboard, the Explorer’s Lounge, wraparound promenade, and aft Aquavit Terrace infinity pool keep the mood unhurried. The Explorers’ Dome planetarium is a signature Orion/Jupiter quirk, and we treat it as worth booking early when stargazing is part of your brief.

Every stateroom has a private veranda, so cabin strategy is less about outdoor access and more about suite tier on long segments. We’d look at Penthouse Veranda or suite categories when space and storage matter; standard Veranda cabins already feel generous versus mainstream balconies. Ask us about forward motion versus midship quiet before you book, because light sleepers still have preferences even on consistent Viking layouts.

Dining stays inclusive across the main Restaurant, World Café, Italian Grill, and Chef’s Table, with beer and wine at lunch and dinner in the fare. Sisters across the Viking Ocean fleet are intentionally identical, so Orion’s edge is itinerary and that Dome rather than a different personality. If destination-led cruising is the goal, check sailings on this page and ask us which voyage segment and cabin tier fit.

She's for
  • Couples who want destination-led, low-pressure ocean cruising
  • Adults-only travellers who value included excursions and Wi-Fi
  • Guests who prioritize spa, enrichment, and veranda time over nightlife
  • World-cruise and Alaska shoppers comparing identical Viking sisters
She's not for
  • Families with children—Viking Ocean is an adults-focused product
  • Party-ship guests chasing waterparks, casinos, and late clubs
  • First-timers who want maximum onboard wow per night
Honest caveat

Orion is nearly identical to her Viking Ocean sisters—the ship name matters less than the itinerary and cabin tier. We’ll help you compare segments and veranda categories so you book the voyage, not just the nameplate.

Show ship backgroundHide ship background

Viking Orion is the fifth identical Viking Ocean ship from Fincantieri Ancona. Keel was laid in February 2017, delivery followed on June 7, 2018, and Livorno christened her on June 14 with former NASA astronaut Anna Lee Fisher as godmother. She was previously known in planning as Viking Spirit and takes her name from the expedition ship National Geographic Orion.

The product story is fleetwide: all-veranda accommodations, included shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and selected beverages, plus Nordic Spa facilities including the complimentary Snow Grotto. Orion and Viking Jupiter uniquely carry the Explorers’ Dome planetarium with resident astronomy programming. Hybrid-efficiency systems and a relatively shallow draft support Viking’s small-port access pitch.

Deployment mixes world cruise segments, Alaska summers, and destination-dense ocean itineraries with fewer sea days and longer calls. Confirm this sailing for current region and embarkation city; specs and upcoming inventory are listed on this page beside the full fact sheet.
