Holland America Goes Year-Round in Europe: Nieuw Statendam Stays Through Winter 2027–28
Holland America will keep Nieuw Statendam in Europe year-round for 2027–28, adding a dozen winter and early-spring sailings with Christmas markets, Mediterranean loops, and Collectors’ Voyages up to 24 days.

What happened
Holland America Line announced on May 28, 2026 that it will cruise Europe year-round for the first time in the 2027–2028 season — and Nieuw Statendam is the ship staying put. Instead of sailing home after the summer peak, the Pinnacle-class vessel picks up a dozen new winter and early-spring itineraries across Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, adding more than 70 European port days compared with the prior year.
Paul Grigsby, Holland America's vice president of deployment and itinerary planning, framed the shift as a chance to show travelers a quieter side of the region — Christmas markets ashore, cooler Mediterranean mornings, and ports that feel less crowded than July. If you've been waiting for a mainstream line to treat November through March as real Europe season, not a repositioning gap, this is the answer.
Winter and spring sailings worth watching
The new calendar mixes Northern Europe sparkle with warmer-weather loops. Nieuw Statendam opens the winter run with a Western Mediterranean sailing from Rotterdam on November 20, 2027, then turns north for a Baltic and Scandinavian Christmas markets cruise departing December 18. In January 2028, a Canary Islands route runs Rotterdam to Barcelona (January 2), followed by a Greek Isles sailing from Athens with an overnight in Istanbul (January 26). The spring stretch includes a Mediterranean voyage from Athens to Lisbon on March 11, 2028.
Select back-to-back combinations qualify as Collectors' Voyages — Holland America's name for linked sailings that can stretch your trip up to 24 days without flying home between segments. That's a meaningful option if you want Christmas market lights in December and Greek island light in January on one extended arc.
Zuiderdam adds two winter voyages of its own: a February 3, 2028 transatlantic from Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona, and a February 17 Western Mediterranean sailing from Barcelona to Rome. Those pair nicely with the Nieuw Statendam loops if you want a Florida start and a European finish — a different rhythm from the Dutch-homeport winter sailings HAL is emphasizing.
What this means for you
This is an off-season play, not a repeat of HAL's summer brochure. You win if Christmas markets, repeat Mediterranean visits without July heat, or simply fewer tour-bus crowds matter more than guaranteed swimming weather. You should still target peak summer if beach days and warm evenings are non-negotiable — our Mediterranean cruise planning guide for 2027 walks through Western versus Eastern route choices and typical booking windows for the classic warm-season trips.
Winter Europe trades sunshine for atmosphere: pack layers, expect shorter daylight in the Baltic, and read each itinerary's port list before you lock flights. Embark ports vary by sailing — Rotterdam features on several Nieuw Statendam departures; Athens and Barcelona anchor others. Confirm homeport and any Dover options on Holland America's booking pages before you deposit.
When we checked on May 31, 2026, sample Holland America sailings that call at Barcelona started from about $1,019 per person including taxes and fees on seven-night loops — useful context while winter 2027–28 pricing settles, not a quote for the November Rotterdam sailing specifically. The grid below shows live Holland America Mediterranean fares that include Barcelona; use it to compare line pricing against your preferred dates while you research the new winter inventory.
If your heart is set on months-long ocean crossings rather than two-week Med loops, see our coverage of Holland America's 2028 Grand Voyages — a different commitment from these shorter Nieuw Statendam winter options.
What to do next
Pull the full 2027–2028 Europe calendar on hollandamerica.com, mark the sailings that match your weather tolerance, and compare total cost against a summer week on the same ship class. If winter fits, request quotes early — Christmas market weeks and linked Collectors' Voyages tend to tighten before general summer inventory does.
