Our take · opinion

Icon-class, still on the ways

Hero of the Seas is the fourth ICON-class mega-ship, still under construction for a 2027 delivery. We’d shortlist her for multi-gen families who already love Surfside, AquaDome, and Icon-scale thrills—and who can wait for a sailing that does not exist yet.

We experience Hero, on paper, as the next chapter of the Icon brief rather than a different product family. Expect the same neighborhood logic sailing sisters already prove: Surfside for young families, Central Park for evenings, Chill Island and Thrill Island for pool and slide days, and AquaDome for glass-covered shows after dark. Until she is delivered, our advice is to treat Icon and Star itineraries as the live rehearsal for whether this scale is actually your group’s happy place.

Cabins should follow the Icon pattern once she enters service: balcony-heavy inventory, Infinite Balconies as the weather-smart middle lane, Family Infinite and Surfside Family Suite categories for kids-heavy parties, and Suite Neighborhood perks up top. We would still pressure-test location the same way we do on Icon—noise and elevators matter on a ship this size. Ask us which live sister sailing to try first if you are not ready to wait for 2027.

Dining and evenings should mirror the Icon playbook of dense complimentary options plus specialty nights and production spectacle. Versus Oasis Plus, Icon-class is the clearer family-zoning and waterpark chapter; versus Icon herself, Hero is simply later steel with the same class DNA. Confirm announced sailings on this page as they appear, and we’ll help you decide whether to wait or book a sister now.

She's for
  • Multi-generational families already sold on Icon-class neighborhoods
  • Shoppers planning 2027-and-beyond who want the newest ICON hull
  • Friend groups who treat a cruise like a theme-park resort week
  • Oasis fans ready for Surfside, AquaDome, and Infinite Balcony living
She's not for
  • Anyone who needs a ship sailing this year, not a future delivery
  • Travellers chasing hush, small-ship calm, or white-tablecloth quiet
  • Crowd-averse guests who dislike mega-ship pools and elevator waits
Honest caveat

Hero is still under construction for a planned 2027 delivery, so itineraries, homeport, and final venue names can still shift. Confirm delivery timing and the first published sailings with us before you plan around her.

Hero of the Seas is the fourth ICON-class ship ordered by Royal Caribbean Group from Meyer Turku in Finland (yard/hull 1403). The class began with Icon (delivered 2023, inaugural Miami 2024), followed by Star (2025) and Legend (2026); Hero was ordered 26 August 2024 for delivery in 2027 Q2. Keel laying began 8 September 2025 at Turku, with hull blocks prefabricated in Poland and assembled in Finland.

ICON ships are dual-fuel LNG vessels with shore-power capability, waste-heat recovery, air lubrication, and fuel-cell systems, sized above Oasis Plus at roughly 250,000 GT class volume. Neighborhood product includes Surfside, AquaDome, Category 6 waterpark features, Central Park, suite neighborhood sundecks, and Infinite Balcony cabin technology introduced across the class.

Until delivery, deployment details remain provisional; Icon-class warm-water patterns have centered on Miami Caribbean weeks, with later Gulf expansion announced for sisters. Confirm published Hero sailings on this page as Royal releases them. Specs below reflect class design intent rather than a ship already in guest service.
