Panamax Princess for itinerary people

We experience Island Princess as the Coral-class Princess pick for Alaska and Panama Canal weeks: midsize enough to feel personal, built for destinations more than megaship toys.

Onboard life is classic Princess with room to walk between venues. The Piazza handles daytime buzz, Movies Under the Stars covers easy evenings, and The Sanctuary is where we send adults who want quiet sundeck time. She's not a thrill-ship; enrichment talks and scenic days carry more weight than water slides or thrill rides.

Nearly eighty percent of outside rooms have balconies, which is the right call for Glacier Bay and canal transit days. We'd book a midship balcony away from the buffet and show lounge overhead. Suites add space and perks, but location still beats square footage for light sleepers on this Coral-class hull.

Dining stays traditional Princess, with Bordeaux and Provence for the main rooms and Bayou Cafe & Steakhouse when you want a specialty night. Versus Grand-class sisters, Island Princess feels more destination-first and less resort-packed. Service and enrichment are the reasons people rebook her, not the newest hardware catalog in the Princess fleet.

We'd book her for Alaska summers from Vancouver or longer Panama Canal runs when the ports are the point of the trip. Ask us before you take a guarantee cabin, and confirm the seasonal homeport against the sailings listed on this page before flights.

She's for
  • Alaska and Panama Canal itinerary-focused travelers
  • Couples who prefer midsize Princess pacing
  • Guests who value enrichment talks and scenic days
  • Return Princess fans who skip megaship thrills
She's not for
  • Families hunting waterparks and high-energy kids zones
  • Shoppers who want the newest Princess hardware
  • Party-forward guests chasing late-night megaship nightlife
Honest caveat

She's a 2003 Coral-class ship. The 2024 drydock kept her tidy, but cabins still lack newbuild Princess tech. Ask us if modern room design is your priority before you book.

Coral-class Island Princess

Show ship backgroundHide ship background

Island Princess is the second Coral-class Princess Cruises ship, built at Chantiers de l'Atlantique in France and delivered for a 2003 debut. Her only sister is Coral Princess. Olympic figure skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier named her in Vancouver on July 11, 2003, ahead of a seven-day Alaska maiden voyage.

The two Coral-class ships are Princess's Panamax pair, sized for the original Panama Canal locks and for itineraries that still use those dimensions. Propulsion combines diesel-electric power with a gas turbine assist. A September 2024 drydock in Palermo covered maintenance, hull work, and light interior refresh rather than a full redesign.

She has also operated longer world-cruise programs in select years when Princess needed a midsize hull for extended itineraries. Typical seasonal pattern is Alaska in summer from Vancouver toward Whittier, with autumn-through-spring Panama Canal and warm-water deployments, so confirm the sailing on this page for the active homeport and itinerary length. Specs and upcoming departures follow.
