East-compass Vista with a fresh spa

We experience Oosterdam as Holland America’s east-compass Vista: the same midsize calm as her sisters, now with a 2025 spa and sundeck refresh. She’s for couples and multi-gen groups who want Alaska or longer itineraries without megaship volume.

We feel Oosterdam as classic Vista HAL with a little more polish after her latest yard period. Days settle around the Lido, Explorations Café, and the Crow’s Nest when the scenery is the point. Evenings still run culinary demos by day and live music by night, plus Explorer’s Lounge classical sets and a main-stage show that stays conversational, not deafening.

Cabins mirror the Vista playbook: balcony-heavy inventory, generous suite terraces on Pinnacle, and Club Orange perks when you book Neptune or Pinnacle Suites. We push midship verandahs for most couples and flag under-Lido or elevator-adjacent banks for light sleepers. Ask us before you lock a category if connecting rooms or accessible layouts matter for the group.

Dining is the HAL familiar loop: Vista Dining Room Anytime or traditional, Pinnacle Grill for steak and the Le Cirque night, Canaletto for Italian, and a Lido Market that moves better than most buffets. The 2025 work also sharpened the Greenhouse Spa thermal story and aft Sea View whirlpools for quieter soak time. Versus Westerdam and Noordam she’s the one we’d nudge first when spa time is part of the brief; confirm sailings on this page with us for Seattle Alaska or South Pacific seasons.

She's for
  • Couples who want midsize HAL polish
  • Alaska or long-itinerary scenery travelers
  • Guests who care about spa and thermal suite time
  • Multi-gen groups that still prefer quiet evenings
She's not for
  • Families hunting water slides and kid resorts
  • Nightlife-first party cruisers
  • Shoppers who insist on brand-new cabin hardware
Honest caveat

She’s still early-2000s Vista hardware under the 2025 spa gloss. Bathrooms and outlets lag Pinnacle-class newbuilds. If cabin modernity is your dealbreaker, we’ll steer the category comparison before you book.

Show ship backgroundHide ship background

Oosterdam is Holland America’s second Vista-class ship, built at Fincantieri Marghera with keel work in early 2002 and an inaugural season that began from Rotterdam in July 2003 after naming by Princess Margriet. Sisters are Zuiderdam, Westerdam, and Noordam. Propulsion is diesel-electric with twin ABB Azipods, and her atrium centerpiece is a large crystal globe rather than Westerdam’s cut-glass sailing ship.

Signature of Excellence work in 2009 added cabins, Canaletto, and cinema space. Later projects added Observation Deck staterooms and The Retreat adults sundeck. The April 2025 Grand Bahama drydock expanded the casino, refreshed the Crow’s Nest with arts and games corners, rebuilt the Greenhouse Spa thermal suite, and upgraded aft Sea View whirlpools and teak.

Deployment commonly centers on summer Alaska from Seattle, with South Pacific, Australia and New Zealand, Hawaii repositionings, and occasional longer world-pattern voyages. Confirm this sailing’s homeport and itinerary on the page before you plan flights.
