Our take · opinion

Princess goes Sphere-scale

Our take: Sun Princess is Princess’s Sphere-class flagship—LNG, The Dome, and a bigger canvas than Royal-class. We’d put couples and multi-gen groups here when they want modern Princess without jumping to Royal Caribbean megaship chaos.

We experience Sun as Princess turning the volume up without losing the Piazza heartbeat. The Dome crowns the top decks as weatherproof entertainment space, the midship Piazza still anchors people-watching, and Park 19 brings climbing nets, splash play, and height thrills older Princess ships simply didn’t have. She’s lively in pockets and calmer than Oasis or Icon, which is the balance we sell her on for mixed-age groups.

Cabins are where strategy matters on a ship this new. Standard balconies remain the volume play for most groups, Reserve Collection mini-suites including cabana-style verandas buy lounge space without full suite money, and Signature Collection suites unlock the exclusive restaurant, lounge, and sundeck slice of The Sanctuary. Ask us about Dome-overhead noise and elevator banks before you lock a category.

Dining and evenings mix Princess comfort with Sphere newness: specialty rooms, Sanctuary quiet hours, and family clubs from Firefly Park through teen lounges. Compared with Royal-class sisters, Sun feels newer, more vertical, and more family-capable while keeping the line’s softer evening tone; scan the Fort Lauderdale sailings on this page, then ask us whether Sphere scale or a smaller Princess hull fits your group better. We’ll also flag whether Reserve Collection space is worth it for your sailing length.

She's for
  • Couples and multi-gen groups wanting newest Princess hardware
  • Travellers who like Piazza energy plus a covered top-deck Dome
  • Families who want Splash Zone and Park 19 without Oasis crowds
  • Princess loyalists ready to step up from Royal-class
She's not for
  • Shoppers who want intimate yacht-feel or expedition landings
  • Anyone chasing the absolute biggest thrills-at-sea product
  • Guests who dislike large-ship elevators and peak-time plazas
Honest caveat

At Sphere scale, peak hours in the Piazza, Dome shows, and elevators still stack up. We’ll steer you toward quieter cabin banks and off-peak dining before you lock a category.

Show ship backgroundHide ship background

Sun Princess is the lead Sphere-class ship from Fincantieri Monfalcone and Princess Cruises’ largest platform to date. Steel cutting began in September 2021, she floated in March 2023, and guest service started in early 2024 after a short delivery delay. Hannah Waddingham christened her in Barcelona on 24 April 2024, with sister Star Princess following in 2025 as the class twin.

Sphere introduced signature hardware: The Dome under glass, a suspended Piazza media sculpture, Park 19 recreation decks, Splash Zone for younger guests, and suite products under Signature and Reserve Collection labels. The class sits above Royal-class in volume while keeping Princess dining and Sanctuary DNA. Tonnage and capacity live on the fact sheet on this page.

Inaugural seasons mixed Mediterranean departures from Barcelona with a later Caribbean base at Port Everglades. Confirm your embarkation city and itinerary on this page; Sphere ships continue to rotate warm-water patterns as the twin settles into regular service.
