Vela-class calm, still building
We read Viking Astrea as the next stretch of Viking Ocean’s Vela-class: still midsize, still adults-leaning destination cruising, just a touch longer and wider than the original Star series. We’d book her for couples who want every cabin balconied, Nordic Spa access included, and port-heavy weeks—not megaship theaters.
Once she sails, expect the familiar Viking Ocean rhythm: long port days, included shore excursions, and quiet evenings in Explorer’s Lounge, Aquavit Terrace, and the living-room atrium rather than club circuits. The Nordic Spa (thermal pool, sauna, and complimentary Snow Grotto) is the wellness reason we send spa-minded couples here, with the aft infinity pool as the photo-deck exhale after a museum day.
Cabin strategy is blessedly simple: all 499 staterooms are verandas across sixteen grades. We’d treat Penthouse and suite categories as the space upgrade, while standard Veranda cabins already beat average ocean insides on square footage. Heated bathroom floors, Freyja amenities, coffee machines, and daily soft drinks come across the board, so pick deck for sun, shade, and theatre distance rather than balcony yes/no.
Dining stacks the main Restaurant, World Café, Italian Grill, and Chef’s Table, with wine and beer included at lunch and dinner and specialty covers already in the fare story. The walk-around promenade and two-deck bow lounge keep the ship feeling boutique even at nearly a thousand guests. Ask us how Astrea’s inaugural Med-to-Northern Europe pattern compares with Vela-class sisters already sailing, and confirm the exact 2027–28 sailing on this page before deposits—delivery timing can still move.

Viking Astrea, on paper
Show ship backgroundHide ship backgroundViking Astrea is a Fincantieri Ancona newbuild (hull 6352) in Viking Ocean’s second, slightly enlarged series that began with Viking Vela. At about 54,300 GT with roughly 998 lower berths in 499 all-veranda staterooms, she sits between classic midsize and “small ship” marketing—longer and wider than the original Star-to-Saturn ten-ship run. Delivery and inauguration are scheduled for June 2027 (earlier plans pointed at 2028).
Sister ships in the modified series include Vela, Vesta, Mira, Libra, Lyra, Leda, and Vega. The program promise matches the fleet: included shore excursions, Wi-Fi, wine and beer at lunch and dinner, Nordic Spa access, and destination-heavy itineraries with overnight calls. Propulsion notes in the yard brief include hybrid efficiency measures and hydrogen-capable fuel-cell work shared with later sisters such as Libra.
Maiden plans open with an Italian Sojourn from Venice toward Rome in June 2027, then reposition toward British Isles and Northern Europe patterns. Confirm the sailing you are considering on this page—pre-delivery schedules are planning documents, not locked product.
