Classic HAL, still unhurried

Volendam is a 1999 Rotterdam-class Holland America ship for travellers who want service, enrichment, and familiar rooms—not the newest hardware. We’d put couples and longer-cruise guests here when pace beats wow.

We experience Volendam as old-school HAL in the best sense for guests who value pace. Public rooms still feel like a flower-themed midsize liner: the Frans Hals Lounge for shows, Explorer’s Lounge for classical evenings, Crow’s Nest for sea days, and Explorations Café when you want coffee and a quiet corner. Energy stays balanced-to-quiet; kids programming exists, but adults set the tone most evenings.

Cabins are the strategy conversation on this hull. She has no standard balcony inventory, so oceanviews, Lanai rooms with walk-out patios, insides, and suites dominate instead of the veranda-heavy maps on newer HAL ships; Pinnacle and Neptune suites unlock Club Orange perks and the Neptune Lounge. If a private veranda is non-negotiable, ask us before you fall in love with the itinerary alone.

Dining runs HAL classics: Rotterdam Restaurant, Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto, and the Lido Restaurant, plus Indonesian crew service that still defines the brand. She’s sister energy to Zaandam, not Pinnacle-class newbuilds, and that is the point for guests who want itinerary depth over hardware novelty; scan the sailings on this page, then ask us whether Volendam’s route value outweighs the older cabin map for your group. We’ll also flag whether a Lanai or a Neptune suite better matches how you use the ship.

She's for
  • Couples who prefer classic HAL service over megaship thrills
  • Longer-cruise and world-voyage shoppers chasing itinerary over newbuilds
  • Guests who like enrichment, classical evenings, and midsize scale
  • Travellers fine with oceanview or Lanai over standard balconies
She's not for
  • Anyone who requires a standard private balcony cabin
  • Families wanting waterparks, big production shows, or high energy
  • Shoppers insisting on the newest HAL Pinnacle-class hardware
Honest caveat

She’s a 1999 R-class ship—soft updates help, but bathrooms, outlets, and the limited balcony map lag newbuilds. Ask us whether an oceanview, Lanai, or suite fits before you book.

MS Volendam is Holland America Line’s second Rotterdam/R-class ship from Fincantieri, delivered on 25 October 1999 with a maiden voyage from Port Everglades on 12 November 1999 and Chris Evert as godmother. Fleetmates included Zaandam plus the former Amsterdam and Rotterdam hulls now sailing for Fred Olsen. Capacity and tonnage sit on the fact sheet on this page.

Interior design leans floral, with atrium glass by L. Vistosi and a collection that includes pre-Columbian pieces and Renaissance fountain elements. Later fleet programs such as Club Orange layered suite privileges onto Neptune and Pinnacle categories without rewriting the ship’s midsize bones; entertainment stayed revue-and-enrichment oriented rather than Broadway megaship scale.

Deployments have mixed Caribbean and longer Grand Voyages from Fort Lauderdale, with occasional Alaska and world-cruise segments across South America, Antarctica approaches, and beyond. Confirm the exact itinerary and embarkation for your sailing on this page; world-cruise routings change year to year.
