Zaandam
Where she is right now
Classic HAL Alaska with music soul
We experience Zaandam as classic Rotterdam-class Holland America: midsize, memorabilia-rich, and built for scenic Alaska and longer voyage pacing rather than Fun Ship energy. We'd put her for couples and multi-gen groups who want HAL polish without chasing the newest balcony megaship.
Zaandam feels like a music museum that sails, with the atrium pipe organ and signed guitars setting a nostalgic tone most modern HAL ships soft-pedal. Crow's Nest covers observation evenings, and the wraparound Lower Promenade is where we send walkers who want fresh air without a jogging-track sprint. Our advice is simple: book her for Alaska scenery and HAL service rhythms, not for waterparks or late-night party circuits.
Cabin strategy matters more here than on newer Pinnacle-class sisters with balcony-heavy inventories. There are no standard balconies in the mix, and only about thirty percent of rooms have step-outs, mostly in suite and verandah grades with Club Orange perks on Neptune and Pinnacle Suites. Oceanviews are plentiful and often the smarter value for daylight Alaska cruising if your group does not need private deck space every morning.
Dining stays classic HAL without chasing specialty overload. Rotterdam Restaurant, Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto, and the Lido cover the week, while evenings lean enrichment and softer shows in the Mondriaan Lounge, with Club HAL available when kids are aboard. Versus newer fleetmates, Zaandam is older hardware with warmer nostalgia, so ask us about verandah versus oceanview before you lock a category on the sailings on this page.

Zaandam, on paper
Show ship backgroundHide ship backgroundMS Zaandam is Holland America Line's third Rotterdam/R-class ship, delivered 6 April 2000 and inaugurated with a 4 May Caribbean cruise from Fort Lauderdale. She shares the class with Volendam, while former sisters Rotterdam and Amsterdam now sail for Fred Olsen as Borealis and Bolette. At roughly 61,400 GT with about 1,430 to 1,720 guests, she remains midsize by today's standards under Netherlands registry in Rotterdam.
Interiors are music-themed throughout, with a two-deck Dutch pipe organ in the atrium and an extensive rock memorabilia collection. Hotel product follows HAL Signature of Excellence patterns including the Rotterdam Dining Room, Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto, Greenhouse Spa, Club HAL, and Crow's Nest. Club Orange amenities apply to Neptune and Pinnacle suite guests, and pickleball courts were added fleetwide in 2023.
Summer programs center on Alaska from Vancouver and Seward or Anchorage embarkations. South America, Panama Canal, and occasional grand voyage seasons also appear in the mix depending on the year. Confirm the embarkation city on the sailing you want; specs and live inventory on this page are the check before you book.
