Newest Royal-class West Coast

We experience Discovery Princess as the sixth Royal-class Princess liner: big-ship comfort with MedallionClass ease, built for Alaska summers and California winters rather than megaship theme-park chaos.

Onboard she reads modern Princess: open decks, the glass SeaWalk cantilever, and an adults-only Retreat Pool pocket when you need quiet from the main plaza. Evenings favor production shows, Movies Under the Stars, and a calmer social pulse than Carnival or Royal megaships. We send her to couples and multi-gen groups who want Princess polish on West Coast itineraries without learning a brand-new class from scratch.

Cabins skew heavily to step-out balconies; there is no traditional Oceanview category here, so most guests choose between inside and veranda. Standard balconies are the volume play for most sailings, but we'd book Sky Suites when a wraparound terrace and top-deck views are the point of the trip. Ask us about aft versus midship banks before you lock a category, especially on Inside Passage weeks with cool evenings on the veranda.

Dining splits across Allegro, Concerto, and Symphony plus casual spots like Horizon Court and Alfredo's, with specialty rooms for nights you want to upgrade the meal. Versus Sky, Enchanted, and the earlier Royal-class sisters, Discovery is the newest hull in that family with the same neighborhood logic shoppers already know. Confirm your sailing on this page and we'll match suite versus balcony to who is traveling.

She's for
  • Couples and multi-gen groups booking Alaska from Seattle
  • West Coast shoppers who want modern Princess without megaship intensity
  • Guests who value balcony-heavy inventory and MedallionClass ease
  • Travellers comparing Royal-class sisters for the newest hull
She's not for
  • Families hunting waterpark slides and high-octane megaship thrills
  • Anyone who needs intimate yacht-scale passenger counts
  • Guests who dislike large-ship plazas even when the vibe is calmer
Honest caveat

At full load, peak pool and elevator banks still need patience on a 3,600-guest Royal-class ship. We'll steer you toward quieter cabin pockets and off-peak dining so you skip the worst bottlenecks.

Discovery Princess is the sixth Royal-class Princess Cruises liner, built at Fincantieri Monfalcone (hull 6290) and delivered for a 2022 inaugural season. She joins Royal, Regal, Majestic, Sky, and Enchanted Princess, with P&O UK's Britannia sharing related design DNA. Volume is about 145,281 GT with roughly 3,600 lower berths across 19 decks.

Steel cutting began in February 2019, and the ship was christened at Port Los Angeles on 29 April 2022. Signature Royal-class hardware includes the glass-enclosed SeaWalk, Movies Under the Stars with a large LED screen, and two-room Sky Suites designed for up to five guests with wraparound terraces. Propulsion is diesel-electric with twin azipods, matching the later Royal-class sisters.

Early programs mixed California roundtrips with summer Alaska sailings from Seattle, plus seasonal repositionings between those hubs. Planned Mediterranean and Caribbean inaugural chapters were reshaped by pandemic timing before the West Coast pattern settled.
